Walking Tours in Italy

FAQs

What are the top walking destinations in Italy?

Italy is blessed with some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and is renowned for its magnificent lakes, mountains and verdant countryside. Its culture and history are equally alluring, with ancient cities such as Rome and Florence stealing the limelight with their architectural wonders.

Our guided walking holidays in Italy steer you among the most picturesque backdrops to uncover the main sights as well as historical routes that take you along the road less travelled. Discover the iconic peaks of the Dolomites and Mont Blanc, explore the medieval hilltop villages of Sicily, or visit the vineyards of Tuscany and sample the world-famous chianti.

Puglia and Matera are particularly charming with their fairytale Trulli houses, hilltop towns and ancient rock churches. Perhaps you prefer to walk along the peninsula of Portofino and experience the romantic Italian sunsets or marvel at the colourful houses of Cinque Terre that nestle into the rocks. Whichever walking holiday in Italy you choose, you’ll be blown away by the country’s natural beauty.

What to expect on a walking tour in Italy?

When it comes to walking holidays, Italy is up there on the list of top destinations. At Exodus, we want you to fall in love with the country, so we introduce you to a rich blend of history, culture and scenery. Whether you go it alone on a self-guided tour or opt for one of our guided walking holidays in Italy, you’re guaranteed an experience of a lifetime.

Whenever possible, we use local leaders who have a wealth of experience and knowledge about each destination. This means you’ll gain an unrivalled insight into the true essence of Italy, from enjoying the best traditional foods and walking unfrequented routes to mingling with the locals, who’ll teach you everything there is to know about the culture. And of course, walking in Italy allows you to explore the most incredible landscapes.

When is the best time to go to Italy?

Each season in Italy has its own unique charms. Although July and August see the warmest temperatures, they are also the busiest months. Winter brings cooler temperatures and rainfall which can be a hindrance especially if you want to go walking in the mountains.

Spring and autumn are the best times to go to Italy as there are fewer crowds and the temperatures are more comfortable, but you’ll still enjoy plenty of sunshine. Italy is especially beautiful during May and June when the landscapes are carpeted with wildflowers but if you want to catch the grape harvest in full swing, then October is the time to go.

How challenging are Exodus's walking tours to Italy?

Each of our walking holidays in Italy are graded based on the level of difficulty and features category specific guidelines to ensure you select the right trip for your level of fitness. Ranging from leisurely to tough+, the gradings take into consideration the length of the walk, route conditions, altitude, weather conditions, level of comfort and the amount of porterage and support available. We recommend you take a close look at these for the trip you’re considering before making your final decision.

Can I travel solo on an Italian walking and trekking trip?

At Exodus we embrace solo travellers with open arms and believe it or not, roughly 50% of our adult travellers choose to go it alone. We will never charge a single supplement for our group tours, and we allow you the option of sharing a room with another traveller of the same gender, or for an additional cost you can have your own room.

When it comes to going solo on a walking holiday, Italy has some fabulous tours to choose from and you’re always guaranteed a small group experience. You’ll find a combination of other like-minded solo travellers, couples or friends and our expert guides will ensure you feel safe throughout your trip.

Just finished a week of classic premium Dolomite hike. It was so much fun and we learned so much about this area. This is a beautiful area. So much history. We stayed the historic Adlers Hotel in Villabassa ( Niederdorf). Its location is very convenient with convenience stores and bus and train station just a few steps away. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. There is a pool and sauna in the hotel. Every meal was fabulous. There are no complaints about the food or service. There will be transport every morning to take us closer to the trailheads. The ability to come back every night to the same hotel is a great luxury. The hikes can be pretty strenuous but it is also incredible fun. We usually leave around 8:30 and comes back around 5pm. Picnic lunches at locations with spectacular views. Stiina, our guide takes us to different terrains and views every day. Not one day is the same. There are routes that I would not have thought it was a route and yet she took us through it. Stiina was fun and gave us clear instructions the night before so we know where we are going and what to expect. The group max at 16 including Stiina and this seems to be a prefect number. There is a variety of ages that comes to this trip. Loved it and definitely recommend this to anyone who loves hiking but prefer not to camp.

Rita Lin Classic Dolomites – Premium Adventure

This trip was exactly as stated and expected and fulfilled a 10 year plus dream to walk in the Alps. The tents were roomy and provides bedding, comfortable and warm. The location of the camps were spectacular with amazing views and atmosphere. Camp food was plentiful and delicious, perfect for fuelling a full days walking. The arrangement of the trip made complete sense in respect of gauging group ability, easing in, resting up before tough stretches and preparation for the final days.

Matthew Wright Tour du Mont Blanc Camping Trek

This hiking/trekking holiday was an amazing experience which included daily challenging hikes along with the incredible natural beauty of Mont Blanc, its’ valleys and surrounding mountains. Our tour mates, 13 women and one man were all wonderfully kind and supportive of one another as we worked hard to meet our daily hiking challenges. I couldn’t have completed this trip without many weeks of training yet I still found the river crossings and some of the terrain, loose rocks making foot placement challenging, to be at the top end of what I was comfortable with. Thank goodness for my waterproof boots and my tour group which kept a slow and steady pace.
